Mayor Alex Penelas's Healthcare Initiative
Mayor Penelas held his first Health Care Initiative on February 15th, 2001 at Miami Dade Community College, Wolfson Campus. The event, sponsored by the University of Miami School of Medicine and various health care entities, brought together approximately 300 participants from the private and public sector to discuss health care access issues. Through a series of presentations and a workshop session, participants developed recommended innovative health care projects, ideas for potential funding sources and a plan of action to serve the County's more than 450,000 uninsured residents. During his address, Mayor Penelas spoke of the many uninsured residents. Many don't know how to get health protection or don't think they need it, yet qualify for existing programs. "It is our responsibility to show them - through outreach, and continue to expand existing State and Federal programs - and create new ones - to cast a wider and less porous protective healthcare net," said Mayor Penelas.

Health Care Access Task Force
Mayor Penelas announced the creation of a Health Care Access Task Force to oversee and assist in implementing recommendation made at the Health Care Initiative, and to investigate the availability of funds to ensure successful execution. Using recommendations from the Health Care Initiative meeting, the Task Force -- comprised of leaders from virtually every aspect of the community and under the direction of Dr. James Bridges, retired physician; local businessman, Carlos Saladrigas and Dr. Steven E. Marcus, President/CEO Health Foundation of South Florida - will, compile recommendations and produce a report.
