The Commonwealth Fund

A private foundation that supports independent research on health and social issues and makes grants to improve health care practice and policy. The Fund is dedicated to helping people become more informed about their health care, and improving care for vulnerable populations such as children, elderly people, low-income families, minority Americans, and the uninsured. The Fund's two national program areas are improving health insurance coverage and access to care and improving the quality of health care services. An international program in health policy is designed to stimulate innovative policies and practices in the United States and other industrialized countries. In its own community, New York City, the Fund makes grants to improve health care and enhance public spaces and services.

Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation
An independent philanthropy focusing on the major health care issues facing the nation. The Foundation is an independent voice and source of facts and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the general public.

The Heritage Foundation
A research and educational institute - a think tank - whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. They have policy briefs on some health related topics such as tax credits to buy health insurance.

Medicare - the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
Administers Medicare, the nation's largest health insurance program, which covers nearly 40 million Americans. Medicare is a Health Insurance Program for people 65 years of age and older, some disabled people under 65 years of age, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure treated with dialysis or a transplant). Mental Health and Aging
Assists older adults, their families and caregivers in obtaining mental health services specific to the needs of older adults. We also provide information on how to advocate to get your needs met.

The National Alliance for Hispanic Health
The sole organization focusing on the health, mental health, and human services needs of the diverse Hispanic communities. Membership of the Alliance consists of thousands of frontline health and human services providers and organizations serving Hispanic communities. The organization was originally founded in Los Angeles in 1973 as the Coalition of Spanish-Speaking Mental Health Organizations to represent and advocate for the mental health needs of Hispanic communities in the United States.

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)
A nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders.

National Council of La Raza's Institute for Hispanic Health (IHH)
Dedicated to reducing the incidence, burden, and impact of health problems in Hispanics. IHH works in close partnership with NCLR affiliates, government agencies, private funders, and other Hispanic-serving organizations to deliver quality health interventions. These interventions focus on improving access to and utilization of health promotion and disease prevention programs. IHH is committed to providing technical assistance and science-based approaches that are culturally competent and linguistically appropriate.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Established as a national philanthropy in 1972 and today it is the largest US foundation devoted to improving the health and health care of all Americans. We concentrate our grantmaking in four areas.

  • to assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost;
  • to improve care and support for people with chronic healthhealth conditions;
  • to promote healthy ommunities and lifestyles; and
  • to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse - tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA)
The Federal agency charged with improving the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative services in order to reduce illness, death, disability, and cost to society resulting from substance abuse and mental illnesses.

The Urban Insititute
A nonprofit nonpartisan policy research and educational organization established to examine the social, economic, and governance problems facing the nation. It provides information and analysis to public and private decision makers to help them address these challenges and strives to raise citizen understanding of these issues and tradeoffs in policy making.

Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
A department within the Department of Health and Human Services that welcomes the participation of faith-based and community-based organizations as valued and essential partners with the Department in assisting Americans in need. CFBCI's mission is part of HHS's focus on improving human services for our country's neediest. CFBCI is the leader of the Department's efforts to better utilize faith-based and community-based organizations in providing effective human services.

Public Agenda
A nonpartisan, nonprofit public opinion research and citizen education organization based in New York City. The two-fold mission of Public Agenda is to:

  • Help leaders better understand the public's point of view on major policy issues. Through in-depth analyses and opinion studies, Public Agenda gives public officials and leaders a unique opportunity to discover what Americans are really thinking. This critical research enables government, industry and organizations to address constituent concerns thoughtfully and effectively.
  • Help citizens better understand critical policy issues so they can make their own more informed and thoughtful decisions. Drawing on its research, Public Agenda prepares a broad array of educational materials that help explain policy issues to the public in a balanced and easy-to-understand way. Citizens can use this information to weigh various choices and make educated decisions. The section on Health Care includes Understanding the Issue section lays, which out the facts and policy alternatives, and a Public Opinion section, which offers a detailed profile of public thinking about the issue.

Institute of Medicine
With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Institute of Medicine will conduct a three-year study of the uninsured that has two overarching objectives:

  • To assess and consolidate evidence about the health, economic and social consequences of uninsurance for persons without health insurance and their families, health care systems and institutions, and communities as a whole.
  • To raise awareness and improve understanding by both the general public policy makers of the magnitude and nature of the consequences of lacking health insurance.

Communities Joined in Action Campaign
The Communities Joined In Action Campaign is working to revolutionize health care by helping communities ensure health care access for all. The Network is to become a catalyst in the national movement to achieve 100% Access/0 Disparities, started in 1998 by the U.S. Bureau of Primary Health Care.
