Norma
Increasingly, it is our observation that CHWs are out in their communities and are developing a reputation as being trustworthy. We have evidence of this through their relationships and stories. For example, CHW Norma in Homestead has been working with an elderly woman from her community. She met the woman at a clinic while doing outreach. When she saw that the woman was about to leave the clinic because she could not get an appointment, Norma reached out to her and helped her find a clinic closer to her home where she would not have to wait so long to be seen. The woman who had been complaining about abdominal pain found out she had uterine cancer after testing positive on a pap smear. She learned this after her first visit at the clinic to which she had been referred by Norma. The doctor and woman called Norma to personally thank her a few weeks later because the cancer was advanced that if she had waited any longer she wouldn't have lived. This is just one of many stories that CHWs carry with them that demonstrates how a relationship with a CHW can be life saving.
