Policy and Advocacy
Myrian moved to Miami from Barranquilla, Colombia in 1983 to offer her children better lives and for the opportunity to receive the best treatment for her daughter, who was born with a heart condition. Before moving to the United States, she was studying to become a lawyer, in her hope to advocate for people’s rights under the law. Myrian has worked to further the rights of farm workers in the South Dade area by educating them on their legal rights in the workplace and immigration status. She has empowered this specific community not only by providing information to them about their legal rights but also by volunteering her free time to teach literacy classes that have provided additional resources to those whom she has taught. She has labored to educate her community on multiple issues ranging from immigration to health care. Because of her commitment to the South Dade community thousands of children have been registered in the KidCare program and thousands more have been provided with Food Stamps, helping them to meet basic needs. Day after day, she meets with community members and allows them to share their stories with her while they learn the keys to self-empowerment from her. She has created a presence for the Human Services Coalition in southern Dade County, especially with the Hispanic population. Myrian has demonstrated the Human Services Coalition logo to the Homestead area community because, “she knows, she can, and she does!”
